South Africa’s COVID-19 death toll rises to 1,284
South Africa recorded 74 more coronavirus deaths late Thursday, bringing the death toll in the country to 1,284, according to the country’s Health Ministry.
Health Minister Zweli Mkhize also said that 3,157 new cases of the virus had been reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s total number of cases to 58,568.
Mkhize also said that so far 1,028,399 people have been tested for COVID-19, with nearly 30,000 tests done Thursday.
“The recoveries to date are 33,252. This translates to a recovery rate of 56.8%,” he said.
The Western Cape and Eastern Cape provinces remain the country’s epicenter of the virus, reporting a high number of cases and deaths daily.
South Africa is the most affected country, accounting for 25% of the continent’s total cases, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.
