Namibia hooker Louis van der Westhuizen signed for South African rugby side the Toyota Cheetahs from fellow South African side the Vodacom Bulls on a one-year contract.

“Van der Westhuizen will report for duty at the Toyota Cheetahs on 1 November,” a statement on the Cheetahs’ website read in part.

Van der Westhuizen, 25, has played for North-West University Pukke in the Varsity Cup and the Leopards rugby team in the Currie Cup, South Africa’s premier domestic rugby union competition. He, however, never had a chance to play for the Bulls this year.

He has also played in two Rugby World Cups (2015 and 2019) having made his international debut aged just 18.

Van der Westhuizen said that the move was definitely a major step in his career and he was looking forward to joining the Cheetahs.

“I think that they are playing very exciting rugby at the moment and it going to be exciting to play with some familiar faces and old teammates from the Varsity Cup days.”

“I really think that I can use my international experience to add some value to the team, but I am very excited to be able to join a quality side that performs at PRO14 level.”

The Cheetahs, one of two South African teams which compete in the Guinness PRO14, lie in 4th place in Conference A on 32 points after 13 games.
