Chinese medical experts have visited one of Algeria’s hospitals treating COVID-19 patients, to help the North African country with its response to the pandemic.
Algeria is one of the worst affected countries by the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa, having reported over 6,600 infections and 542 deaths, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
But health officials are confident the country is seeing an improvement in the situation.
“The situation in our hospital is controllable and improving. There have been no deaths in the past ten days. And we have only three critically ill patients. We’re also seeing an increase in recoveries,” said Tati Nafaa, the Director General, Hospital of Bab el-Oued, Algiers.
The visiting team of Chinese medical experts has also expressed confidence in Algeria’s response to the disease.
“The facilities are good .. the wards are equipped with necessary devices for COVID-19 patients. The staffing is sufficient, and they’re taking good care of the patients,” said Zhou Lin, Head of the Chinese Medical Expert Team to Algeria.
The medical cooperation also serves to show the strong ties that exist between China and Algeria, one that Bab el-Oued hospital hopes will continue for years to come.
“We served since many years the Chinese patients, we treat them like Algerian people. We can do a partnership in many fields,” said Abderrahmane Sidi Said, the hospital’s Medical Manager.
