The South African Football Association (SAFA) confirmed the appointment of Tebogo Motlanthe as the new acting CEO, replacing Gay Mokoena who left the organisation in April.
A statement released by SAFA on Saturday said that Motlanthe’s appointment takes effect immediately.
“The South African Football Association (SAFA) NEC has unanimously endorsed the appointment of Advocate Tebogo Motlanthe as the new Acting CEO of the organization,” the statement read in part.
Motlanthe, a lawyer, was part of the legal team that saw SAFA win a case against Fli-Afrika Limited which was seeking compensation worth 17 million Rands from SAFA for monies they claim they were deprived of during the FIFA 2010 World Cup.
He has served as SAFA’s legal officer since 2011.
One of his immediate tasks will be to help steer the association through the disruptions to the football season occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic.
He will also have to work to restore the image of SAFA which was dented through a letter leaked to the media following his predecessor’s controversial exit.
Mokoena, after leaving SAFA, wrote a letter to the body’s national executive committee accusing SAFA President Danny Jordaan of running SAFA like his own fiefdom. Mokoena also accused Jordaan of violating corporate governance principles and SAFA statutes among a host of other allegations.
