BREAKING NEWS: Former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak dies at 91
Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s president for almost 30 years who was ousted from power in what later became known as the “Arab Spring” has died.
Egyptian State TV confirmed Mubarak’s passing.
Mubarak was born in a rural village in the Nile Delta on May 4, 1928. He left behind a complicated legacy as his rule was partly characterised by corruption, police brutality, political repression, and entrenched economic problems.
Mubarak was widely viewed as a war hero for playing a pivotal role in the 1973 war to liberate Sinai from Israeli occupation.
His political career was launched in 1975 with his appointment to the vice-presidency by then, president, Anwar Sadat.
Mubarak ascended to the presidency following the assassination of Anwar Sadat in 1981.
Mubarak ruled Egypt for 30 years and his time as president was one of relative peace and stability in Egypt. It was also one marred by corruption scandals and allegations of abuse power.
18 days of protests in 2011 eventually forced Mubarak from office. Mubarak, along with his two sons and several political aides, was later arrested and sent to prison but was freed in 2017 after being acquitted of most charges.
Mubarak was praised for not fighting protesters in 2017. Critics and supporters say his actions helped keep Egypt from a civil war.
He refused all offers to leave Egypt to live in exile following the uprising.
Mubarak died in a Cairo hospital where he had recently undergone surgery.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne and his sons, Gamal and Alaa.
