Communal clashes in western Ethiopia kill eight people

Read < 1 minute

Eight people were killed and 385 others displaced in communal clashes earlier this month in the Benishangul-Gumuz regional state in western Ethiopia, according to a statement by local authorities.

13 suspects were also arrested in connection with the clashes which occurred in the Wembera area in Metekel zone.

An investigation into the clashes has been launched and state and federal authorities have deployed security officers to avert a fresh outbreak of violence.

Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands of others displaced since the violence along the border areas of Benishangul Gumuz and Amhara states started in April last year.

In May last year, 69 people, including eight government officials, were arrested over the clashes.

In June, armed men killed more than 50 people and injured 23 others in Metakal zone.

Benishangul Gumuz hosts Ethiopia’s largest development project, the 6450 MW Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Hydro Dam, which is under construction on the Blue Nile River.

Ethnic violence has been a recurring problem under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, causing Ethiopia to record more displaced people than any other country in 2018.
