UN seeks $1 billion for Ethiopia humanitarian response for 2020
The United Nations, the Ethiopian government and its partners have launched a 1 billion-U.S.-dollar plan to respond to the humanitarian need in Ethiopia for 2020, a UN spokesman said Wednesday.
The humanitarian response plan aims to help 7 million of the 8.4 million people identified as being in need of humanitarian aid in the country, said Stephane Dujarric at a daily press briefing.
“It is expected that displacement caused by conflict, disease outbreaks, rain shortfalls in parts of the country and floods in others will continue to drive humanitarian needs in Ethiopia this year,” he said.
Currently, Ethiopia is experiencing one of the most severe desert locust invasions, which could lead to loss of livelihoods and food insecurity if not contained soon.
Last year, the annual humanitarian response plan for Ethiopia set a target of gathering 1.314 billion dollars to aid 8.3 million of some 8.86 million in need.
