English Premier League club Arsenal on Friday sacked Spanish coach Unai Emery following a run of seven games without a win.
The last in that string of results was a 2-1 home defeat to German club Eintracht Frankfurt on Thursday in the Europa League.
Emery, who replaced Arsene Wenger in May 2018, was in charge of the club for 18 months having previously coached French champions Paris Saint-Germain and former Europa League winners Sevilla.
Arsenal finished fifth in Emery’s first season in charge and reached the Europa League final, which it lost to Chelsea.
“Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success,” a statement from club read.
“The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required.”
Former Arsenal player Freddie Ljungberg will take over as interim manager as the club searches for a permanent replacement.
