Morocco’s RS Berkane keeps alive treble dreams with Confederation Cup win

Read < 1 minute

Morocccan side RS Berkane is just four wins away from making history in what may end up to be a golden season.

On Sunday, the club defeated Tanzanian giants Simba SC 3-1 on aggregate to win the CAF Confederation Cup for a record-equaling third time. Berkane’s other previous wins came in 2020 and 2022.

The continental victory came just over two months after Berkane secured their first-ever Moroccan league title. The team put on a strong attacking display, and an even better masterclass in defence, over the course of the season to clinch the title ahead of their closest challengers, AS FAR, with five games to spare.

Winning the league also confirmed their participation in the CAF Champions League next season.

Now with two titles already in the bag, the club can turn its attention to the domestic cup, the Throne Cup. Berkane will face Kawkab Marrakech in the last 16 on June 1.

Berkane are one of the favorites to win the trophy. However, should they get past the second-tier club, AS FAR, the most successful side in the competition, awaits them in the quarterfinals.

Winning the competition thereafter is expected to be slightly easier given their status as the best team in the country and a continental powerhouse.

A treble would place Berkane in an elite group of African teams that have achieved the feat: Al Ahly (Egypt), Hearts of Oak (Ghana), MC Alger (Algeria), TP Mazembe (Democratic Republic of Congo), Esperance Tunis (Tunisia) and Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa).
