South Africa crowned World Rugby champions
South Africa is the new Rugby world champion after beating England 32-12 in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final in Japan.
Tries by Cheslin Kolbe and Makazole Mapimpi put the gloss on an incredible goalkicking show by Handre Pollard, who kicked 22 points to put his side in control throughout the game.
The Springboks shattered the English dreams of revenge, having also emerged winners in a similar final in 2007.
They showed greater passion and intensity than their semi-final win over Wales, earning plaudits from the world over.
The South Africans have now won the Rugby World Cup three times, a joint record with New Zealand who won bronze on Friday.
Ahead of the game, captain Siya Kolisi expressed confidence in his charges ability to win a third title.
“We know how much rugby means to the country and what it has done in the past. We have the country behind us, which is something huge … I can’t imagine what it would be like (in South Africa if) we win the trophy,” he said.
After the title win, he said the performance the Springboks pt up can inspire his countrymen back home to unite and achieve anything they set their eyes on.
“I have never seen South Africa like this. We were playing for the people back home. We can achieve anything if we work together as one,” Kolisi said.
Among the thousands of fans watching the game at the the International Stadium Yokohama was South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
“Congratulations to the Springboks for winning the 2019 Rugby World Cup final. We have proven as a country that we are indeed stronger together. We are bringing the Webb Ellis Cup back home where it belongs. Sheer brilliance and true sporting excellence,” President Ramaphosa said on Twitter.
