Eight people were killed after a Russian soldier opened fire on his colleagues at an army base, officials from the county said on Friday

The incident happened at a base in the eastern town of Gorny in the Lake Baikal region, some 150km north of the Mongolian border.

The officials say the gunman – who has since been detained –shot his fellow soldiers after potentially having a nervous breakdown.

The identity of the gunman has not been revealed yet.

Two other people were also wounded in the incident, but their lives are not in danger.

A special commission led by Deputy Defence Minister Andrey Kartapolov has been deployed to the region to investigate the shooting.
