Iranian FM in Egypt on regional tour over Israeli escalation
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi held talks with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi here on Thursday as part of his regional tour to discuss the ongoing Israeli escalation in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon.
During the meeting, Sisi reiterated Egypt’s position calling for the prevention of the expansion of the conflict and emphasized the need to stop the escalation to avoid a full-scale regional war, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.
Sisi also stressed “the necessity of continuing and intensifying international efforts aimed at reaching a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon,” according to the statement.
The Iranian foreign minister expressed his country’s appreciation for Egypt’s ongoing efforts to achieve stability and security in the region, it noted.
Both sides agreed on the importance of continuing the current path to explore prospects for further advancing relations between the two countries, according to the Egyptian presidency.
Araghchi arrived in Cairo on Wednesday evening after visiting Amman, where he held talks with Jordanian King Abdullah II and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East.
Egypt is the eighth leg of Araghchi’s regional tour that started last week and included Lebanon, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, and Oman.
Iranian leaders have repeatedly called for unity among Muslim countries to counter Israel’s attacks on Gaza and Lebanon.
On October 1, Iran launched approximately 180 missiles at Israel, describing the attack as retaliation for the assassinations of Hamas Politburo Chief Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas leader Nasrallah, and senior Iranian commander Abbas Nilforoushan, as well as Israel’s increased “malicious acts” against Lebanon and Palestinian territories, which it alleges are supported by the United States.
