Zambian President Edgar Lungu on Thursday called on countries to maintain momentum on addressing the effects of climate change.
The Zambian leader said climate change had the potential to undermine developmental gains made so far.
Speaking at State House when he received letters of credence from 15 new ambassadors accredited to Zambia, Lungu said the just-ended United Nations Climate Action Summit resolved to accelerate the momentum to address the climate change crisis.
According to him, commitments made at the summit such as cutting carbon emissions, scaling up financial commitments and contributions to the Green Climate Fund needed to be maintained.
The Zambian leader urged the newly-accredited ambassadors to work with his government in tackling the negative effects of climate change.
According to him, all countries aspire to live in peace and stability as well as fostering development in a sustainable manner for the betterment of the people.
“These ideals as outlined in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other developmental frameworks require that we collaborate closely to foster development and resolve global challenges related to conflicts ad humanitarian crises.” he said.
