Zimbabwe announced on Thursday that ex-president Robert Mugabe would be buried at his home village in Zvimba as requested by his family, and no longer at a special mausoleum that was already under construction.

The announcement brings an end to the nearly three-week-old tussle between the government and the Mugabe family over the former president’s final resting place.

Zimbabwe president, Emmerson Mnangagwa had initially pushed for Mugabe to be buried at the National Heroes Acre monument.  Political analysts and ZANU-PF party sources said Mnangagwa wanted to use the burial to display a public reconciliation with Mugabe’s admirers.

Many in Mugabe’s family are bitter over his ouster nearly two years ago and the role played by Mnangagwa, who was elected president after Mugabe was toppled.
