The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) has warned that the East African region will experience more heavy rainfall between April 27 and May 4, 2024.

According to ICPAC, heavy rainfall will affect central to western Kenya, northern Uganda, southern Ethiopia, and central Somalia. ICPAC’s predictions also indicate that the Greater Horn of Africa region will receive enhanced rainfall in May.  

In the wake of this prediction, the regional body is underscoring the need for enhanced regional cooperation in early warning systems.  

“As floods continue to pose challenges in the region, IGAD remains committed to collaborating with its member states to address climate change through both mitigation and adaptation strategies,” said IGAD Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu. 

The IGAD chief further stated that, given the current forecasts, working in solidarity is the strongest asset in navigating the challenges faced. 

According to ICPAC’s technical report, the devastating floods have killed at least 193 people, including children, across the Horn of Africa in recent weeks and displaced more than 700,000 people, with the rains showing no signs of slowing down.  

In Kenya alone, the deluge has submerged numerous settlements, displacing 24,196 households, comprising approximately 131,450 people and endangering others. This situation has forced the government to set up 50 camps across the country. Since its onset, at least 76 people have died while 19 people have been reported missing according to a statement by the Kenyan government.  

“The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) extends profound solidarity to the people and government of Kenya in the wake of severe flash floods triggered by heavy rains across the country”, an IGAD statement has said. 

It concludes with a pledge to continue providing timely forecasts and advisory measures to safeguard lives and livelihoods, ensuring a safer and more secure region for all.
