Former Ghana international striker Manuel Junior Agogo has died aged 40, the Ghana Football Association confirmed on Thursday.
“On behalf of the Ghanaian football fraternity, we extend our sincere condolences to the family of our Black Star, Junior Agogo. May his soul Rest In Peace,” a statement on the Ghana FA’s official Twitter account read in part.
Agogo played for English sides Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Bristol Rovers. The latter club was where he made a name for himself netting 40 goals in a three-season spell.
In 2006, Agogo also notably helped Nottingham Forest win promotion to the Football League Championship, the second-tier league of English football.
Internationally, Agogo won 27 caps for Ghana scoring more than 10 goals and represented the Black Stars at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.
Agogo’s playing career ended at Scottish club Hibernian in 2012. He had also previously played for clubs in the United States, Cyprus and Egypt.
Agogo suffered a stroke in 2015 leaving him in a greatly weakened state and struggling with his speech.
His former clubs took to social media in the aftermath of his death to pay tribute to him.
