Italian club AC Milan on Sunday announced the signing of Algerian midfielder Ismaël Bennacer on a five-year deal for a reported fee of €16 million from fellow Italian club Empoli.

Bennacer, 21, was reported to be a transfer target for his former club Arsenal where he made 23 appearances for the under-23 side after joining them in 2015. He made only one appearance for the senior team in a League Cup game.

Bennacer had previously also played for Ligue 2 clubs Arles-Avignon and Tours in France.

Empoli was relegated from Serie A in the 2018-19 season, along with Chievo and Frosinone, after finishing 18thin the league.

Bennacer represented France at Under-18 and Under-19 levels but then switched allegiance to Algeria in 2016. He has won 16 caps with the Algerian national team and played 7 games in their title-winning campaign in Egypt this year.

In addition to winning the Cup of Nations, Bennacer was also named Player of the Tournament.
