The Tanzanian government on Thursday confirmed the death of Joshua Mollel.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation January Makamba said the student died on October 7 soon after being taken hostage by Hamas.

Makamba said that the ministry had informed the student’s family of his passing after receiving communication from the Israeli government.

Joshua Mollel is the second Tanzanian student to die in Israel during the country’s conflict with Hamas. Clemence Felix Mtenga disappeared, also on October 7. He was buried later in Tanzania on November 28.

Mollel and Mtenga were among 260 Tanzanian students who went to Israel for internships in agriculture-related programmes.

Makemba says the Tanzanian government plans to fly Mollel’s father and a government official to Israel to learn more about his death.
