AU to roll out master plan to make Africa energy sufficient
The African Union is working on a master plan to address the continent’s energy needs.
Despite being rich in energy resources, Africa has the lowest levels of per capita use of modern energy in the world.
Sub-Saharan Africa is the least electrified region in the world with almost 600 million people still lacking access to power.
“We are developing a master plan for energy in the continent with the purpose of making Africa benefit from all the sources of energy and even produce extra,” Amani Abou-Zeid a commissioner with AU’s Infrastructure and Energy Commission said.
Nthati Moorosi, the Chairperson AU Special Technical Committee for Communications and ICT called for a coordinated effort to address the issue.
“We need partnerships across nations and sectors that can boost productivity, diversify energy sources, and invest in people,” she said.
