Algerian army forces seized half a ton of drugs in the southwestern province of El-Bayadh, Algerian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Sunday.

The source noted that as part of the efforts to curb the spread of drug trafficking in Algeria, an army unit in coordination with the gendarmerie police has managed to seize half a ton of narcotics hidden in a four-wheel vehicle in the locality of Bousmaghoun in El-Bayadh, 600 km southwest to Algiers, near the Moroccan border.

Algerian anti-drug forces have confiscated more than 8.54 tons of drugs during the first three months of 2019, an 18.26-percent increase compared with a year earlier, according to official figures.
