English Premier League club Aston Villa on Wednesday confirmed the signing of Egyptian winger Mahmoud “Trézéguet” Hassan from Turkish club Kasimpasa for an undisclosed fee.
The transfer’s completion is subject to a work visa and international clearance. He will join national team captain Ahmed Elmohamady who plays for Villa as a right-back.
Trézéguet, 24, has previously played for Egyptian giants Al Ahly and Belgian clubs Anderlecht and Mouscron.
Trézéguet represented hosts Egypt at the just concluded 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations. He scored one goal in four appearances, the opening goal of the tournament as Egypt beat Zimbabwe 1-0.
Trézéguet’s former club, Kasimpasa, thanked him for his dedication and effort and wished him well at his new club.
Villa Head Coach Dean Smith expressed his delight at the signing of Trézéguet.
“He’s the type of wide player that we have been looking for who is direct, causes problems for the opposition in the final third and scores goals,” Smith told Villa’s official website.
Aston Villa was promoted to the Premier League after three seasons in the Championship following their 2-1 victory over Derby County in the Championship playoff final, the game dubbed “the richest game in football”.
Trézéguet becomes the latest African to move clubs in the wake of the Cup of Nations. Algerian duo Yacine Brahimi and Mehdi Abeid recently moved to Qatari side Al Rayyan and French club Nantes respectively.
