FIFA President in Cairo for CAF General Assembly
FIFA President Gianni Infantino is in Cairo for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) 41st General Assembly.
Infantino arrived in the Egyptian capital on Wednesday ahead of the Thursday Forum, which comes amid a push by FIFA for CAF to accept its top delegate, Secretary-General Fatma Samoura, as a “General Delegate to Africa.”
The General Assembly is also the first since CAF President Ahmad Ahmad was arrested in France for alleged graft. He was later released after being questioned by the French authorities.
Ahead of the Assembly, FIFA President Infantino said the plan to have Samoura within CAF ranks would help “significantly improve” football on the continent.
The admission of the FIFA Secretary General into CAF will be discussed in the Cairo forum, with a decision expected at the end of the meeting.
The 41st Assembly comes just a day before the final game of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, which is hosted by Egypt.
The game will be held at the Cairo International Stadium, with both FIFA and CAF presidents expected to attend.
The final will be a clash against Senegal and Algeria.
The Teranga Lions will be seeking their first ever AFCON title, while the Desert Foxes will be seeking their second. Algeria’s first and only AFCON title came in 1990.
