Talk Africa: Child marriage
Marriage before the age of 18 is a violation of human rights, that’s according to the United Nations Convention of the rights of the child.
1 in 5 women globally are however still married off as children despite near-universal commitments to root-out the practice.
But even as slow gains are being made in tackling the marriage of children, up to 765 million people today have been married off as minors.
So what issues are at play in the seemingly entrenched practice? And will the world succeed in meeting its goal of eliminating child marriage by 2030?
