AFCON 2019: Senegal says losing to Kenya “not an option”

Senegal will head into their final 2019 AFCON group stage game seeking a win in order to ensure qualification to the Round of 16, striker Sada Thioub has declared.

The Teranga Lions will play Kenya on Monday after falling to a 1-0 loss to Algeria in their last match, jeopardizing their quest to finish top of the group.

The West African side is currently ranked second in Group C on three points, same with Kenya but with a superior goal difference. Algeria tops the Group with six points, having won their first two games. Tanzania is placed fourth, having not lost both games so far.

“Losing is not an option tomorrow. We are just focusing on winning to qualify,” Thioub said ahead of Monday’s game.

On his part, coach Aliou Cissé has hinted at playing the same team he used I his last game, banking on consistency to obtain the desired result.

“I won’t be having any radical changes in the line-up. I believe in consistency. We played very well in front of Algeria in the first 25 minutes. The loss is hard to take but we have to win to keep competing.,” he said.

The 2019 AFCON continues today with clashes pitting Uganda against Egypt, Zimbabwe against DR Congo, Burundi against Guinea and Madagascar against Nigeria

Teams that have already qualified for the Round of 16 stage include, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Algeria.
