US issues safety warning in Tanzania, following attack rumors

The US embassy in Tanzania has warned its citizens to take precautionary measures, warning of “rumours of impending attacks” in a tourist area of the main city Dar es Salaam.

In a tweet, the rare security warning also noted there was “no substantiating evidence of the threat or information on the timing.”

Police chief Simon Sirro told BBC Swahili that he was aware of the rumours and the police are following them up.

“It’s news like any other news, it might be true or false, but we don’t ignore it,” he told BBC, adding that the intelligence service had the information since Tuesday.

The last major attack occurred in 1998, when the US embassy was targetted in an al-Quaeda bombing, leaving 11 dead.
