Libya’s east-based army on Friday announced that at least 12 Islamic State (IS) militants were killed in southern Libya.

The army “carried out a surprise attack against IS remnants hiding in Haruj mountains, and 99killed more than 12 terrorists of a group called the Lonely Wolves,” the army’s information department said in a statement.

The army also destroyed six vehicles and seized several others, the statement added.

The terrorists hiding inside Haruj mountains in southern Libya are responsible for several terrorist attacks in the region, it noted.

In April and May, the IS claimed responsibility for four terrorist attacks in southern Libya, which has been controlled by the army since January.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and unrest ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011.
