Egypt names final 23-man squad for 2019 AFCON duty
Egypt on Tuesday named its squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled to begin later this month.
Coach Javier Aguirre named a strong Pharaoh side for the elite continental competition, and will be hoping to take advantage of home support to lift the trophy.
Premier League trio of Mohamed Salah, Mohamed Elneny and Ahmed Elmohamady are included in the 23-man squad.
The North African country will host the tournament that begins on 21 June and ends on 19 July.
They are pooled alongside Zimbabwe, Uganda and the Democratic republic of Congo in Group A.
The Pharaohs’ first game will be on 21 June against Zimbabwe at the Cairo International Stadium in the capital.
Aguirre will be hoping to go one step further in the 2019 AFCON tournament to diffuse the team’s pain from the 2017 edition.
In 2017, Egypt lost to Cameroon in the final game to finish as runners up.
Should the North Africans win the 2019 AFCON, they will extend history by becoming the only side to have won the title eight times. Cameroon are the second side with five AFCON titles.
