Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer Asamoah Gyan has reversed his decision to make himself unavailable for selection for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and retire from international football.
Gyan made the decision following a telephone discussion with Ghanian president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who asked him to rescind his decision to retire permanently from the men’s national team.
Gyan stunned the footballing world on Monday when he announced his retirement from international football a month before the continental showpiece after learning that he was to be replaced as captain of the men’s national team.
Multiple reports said Andre Ayew, who plays for Turkish Süper Lig club Fenerbahçe, was likely to captain the Black Stars.
“I have taken the request of His Excellency Nana Addo Dabnkwa Akufo-Addo in good faith, and will make myself available for selection by coach Kwesi Appiah,” a statement posted on Gyan’s official Twitter account read in part.
“My desire to help Ghana end the over three-decade long wait to annex the AFCON trophy still burns strong, and I remain committed to serving this great nation and the people of Ghana,” Ryan said.
Ghana are in Group F of the Africa Cup of Nations along with reigning champions Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau.
Gyan, who made his international debut at the age of 17 in 2003, has scored 51 goals in 106 games for his country.
Gyan also played for Ghana at three World Cups: in Germany in 2006, in South Africa in 2010 and in Brazil in 2014.
