Kenyan teachers transferred due to al-Shabaab threat
Kenya’s Teacher’s Service Commission has transferred primary tutors from two schools in the northeastern region following a recent al-Shabaab attack, local Daily Nation reports.
“We took the move after Hareri Hosle village was attacked last week,” County TSC boss Yusuf Abdullahi said.
The official said the move was necessary for the safety of the teachers, since Hareri Hosle neighbours the affected villages where the teachers were serving.
He however said the move was only a temporary one.
The transfers have however been condemned by clan elders in the region, who feel TSC is denying local children their constitutional rights.
“The move to withdraw teachers from our schools is uncalled for and it denies our children their right to education,” Daily Nation quotes Libehia Ward Representative Farah Abdinoor.
Abdinoor called upon the national government to scale up security in the region in order for learning not to be interrupted.
Kenya’s northeastern region has been dogged by militant attacks staged by al-Shabaab. The militants were reported to have crossed over from Somalia, where the group is based.
Al-Shabaab has waged a decade-long war in Somalia, killing tens of thousands and displacing millins others. In recent years, the group also staged attacks in neighboring countries.
Kenya and other countries in the region have joined forces to rid the region of al-Shabaab. The counter-terrorism drive has largely forced the militants into hiding, though thsy still manage to stage attacks occasionally.
