Kenyan Premier League club Kariobangi Sharks will play against English Premier League club Everton in the Sportpesa Cup at Nairobi’s Kasarani Stadium on July 7.

The fixture was announced by betting firm Sportpesa, who are the organisers of the match.

The Sportpesa Cup is an annual tournament created and sponsored by Sportpesa, which pits English club Everton and the winners of the Sportpesa Super Cup.

The Sportpesa Super Cup is an annual eight-team knockout tournament featuring four teams from Kenya and Tanzania.

Kariobangi Sharks earned the right to play Everton following a 1-0 win against fellow KPL side Bandari FC in the final of the Sportpesa Super Cup at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Everton are the defending champions having beaten Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia in 2017 and 2018.

This will be the second time Everton will play in East Africa. Their last outing in July 2017 at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, saw them beat Gor Mahia 2-1 to win the inaugural match.

In 2018, Everton defeated Gor Mahia 4-0 at Goodison Park in Liverpool, England, to retain the cup.

According to Sportpesa, the fixture serves as a valuable learning experience and a good means of exposure for both teams.
