An Indian man cut off his own finger after he accidentally voted for the wrong party in his country’s ongoing elections, local ANI news agency reports.
Pawan Kumar said he has planned to vote for the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in the second round of the election in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, but he mistakenly voted for a different party.
“I accidentally pressed the button having the lotus symbol instead of an elephant,” ANI quotes Kumar.
“I chopped my finger for the mistake.”
Voting in India’s elections opened on 11 April, and will run until 19 May.
The country has a population of 1.3 billion people with some 900 million registered as voters.
10,35,918 polling stations will be used in the election, as more than 8,000 candidates from 460 political parties vying for the 543 seats in the lower house. In order to win, a party or a coalition needs a minimum of 272 MPs. The victorious party forms a government.
