The African Union threatened to suspend Sudan in 15 days unless the military steps aside and hands over power to a civilian-led political authority.
A statement by the Union’s Peace and Security Council insisted that the process to install the authority should be inclusive and consultative.
The AU also warned the military against acting or issuing statements that would further complicate the situation and negatively affect regional security and stability.
The Chairperson of the AU Commission was urged to take appropriate measures to ensure the implementation of the Council’s resolutions.
The AU called on its partners and the international community to support efforts to restore democracy in Sudan while respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Omar al-Bashir was ousted from power by the military on April 11 following months of civilian protests against his 30-year rule.
Protesters have continued to stage demonstrations demanding that the military turn over power to a civilian government.
