Manchester United appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager on a three-year contract
English Premier League club Manchester United appointed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as its permanent manager on a three-year contract.
Solskjaer, who was in charge of Norwegian club Molde, took over as caretaker manager following the dismissal of Jose Mourinho in December last year.
“This is the job that I always dreamed of doing and I’m beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long-term and hopefully deliver the continued success that our amazing fans deserve,” Solskjaer told Manchester United’s official club website.
Solskajer has overseen an upswing in United’s form since taking over. The team has won 14 of 19 games played under his control. In that run, Solskajer famously masterminded United’s progression into the Champions League quarterfinals by overcoming a 2-0 first leg defeat at home to French champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Round of 16.
He has also brought United back in contention for a top-four spot in the Premier League despite being off the pace at the time of Mourinho’s departure.
Manchester United’s Executive Vice Chairman Ed Woodward said Solskajer is the right man to take the club forward.
“More than just performances and results, Ole brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a coach, coupled with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club,” Woodward told the club’s website.
Solskajer played for Manchester United between 1996 and 2007 scoring 126 goals in 366 appearances for the club. The highlight of his playing career at Old Trafford was winning the treble (Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League) in 1999.
He became United’s reserve team manager in 2008 before joining Molde and, later on, Cardiff City.
