At least 11 people were killed in Kenya in a grisly road accident on Friday which involved a passenger van and a truck.
The accident occurred on the Nairobi-Nakuru road, with reports indicating that the truck rammed into the van causing it to roll several times.
The driver of the truck is said to have survived the accident and fled off.
“The information we are getting is that the truck started swerving from one side of the road to the other before hitting the matatu (van) and the other vehicles,” The Star local newspaper reports Officer Commanding Police Division in Gilgil, Emmanuel Opuru, to have said.
“All the eleven passengers in the matatu that include six women and five men died on the spot while the driver of the truck escaped soon after the accident,” he confirmed.
Road accidents have posed a huge challenge for authorities in the East African country for years.
According to the World Health organization, between 3,000 and 13,000 Kenyans lose their lives in road traffic crashes every year.
Transport authorities have however come up with strict laws in attempts to curb such occurrences, though some accidents have still been blamed on non-compliance of rules and regulations.
