More than 50 passengers were killed in a pre-dawn collision between two buses on Ghana’s Tamale-Kintampo Highway.
According to MyNewsGh.com, the accident happened in Amoma, a village near Kintampo in the Kintampo North Municipality of the Bono East Region.
Eyewitness say a VVIP Kia bus traveling towards Kumasi collided with a Grandbird bus that was heading towards Bolgantaga.
The eyewitness said, it is unclear what might have caused the collision but it is speculated that one of the drivers might have been dozing off and a result, the bus veered into the lane of traffic headed in the opposite direction. Investigators haven’t determined what caused the accident.
Police say one the buses burst into flames upon impact.
“Most of the passengers in both vehicles died at the spot. A number of them with varying degrees of injuries have been rushed to the hospital,” a police spokesperson said.
The road remains closed in both directions as the investigation and search for bodies continues.
VVIP is one of Ghana’s largest privately owned long-distance bus companies.
