Armenia’s Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan will attend the Rwandan genocide commemoration that will be held on April 7.
The East African country this year marks the 25th anniversary of the genocide, and the government has planned a memorial event to honor the victims of the period.
More than 250,000 people were killed in the period between 7 April to mid-July 1994, as Rwanda descended into violence sparked by ethnic hostilities.
Ahead of the April 7 commemoration, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), Anna Naghdalyan, said Mnatsakanyan will attend the event as part of his two nation visit to Africa.
Other than Rwanda, the foreign minister is also set to visit Ethiopia, where he will hold talks with the country’s leadership.
“Armenia and Rwanda closely cooperate at international organizations in genocide prevention,” Naghdalyan said as she announced Mnatsakanyan visit.
Other leaders are also expected to attend the genocide commemoration, with Rwanda also sending an invite to French President Emmanuel Macron.
