At least four people were rescued after a building partially collapsed during a demolition exercise in Lagos Island on Monday.
The building located had been marked by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LSBCA) for demolition and according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) the officials were on top of the building when some scavengers tried to remove the doors on the ground floor and the remaining part of the building collapsed on them.
Lagos State Fire Service spokesperson, Amodu Shakiru confirmed that the four were receiving treatment at the General Hospital after sustaining minor injuries.
This comes just barely a week after another building collapsed last Wednesday in the Ita-faji area of Lagos island killing 20 people.
Weak enforcement of regulations and poor construction materials used in buildings has meant that Nigeria is frequently hit by building collapses. In 2014, 116 people died when a six-storey building collapsed in Lagos during a church service. While in 2016 more than 100 people were killed when a church came down in southeastern Nigeria. A five-story building, still under construction, collapsed in the same year killing at least 30 people.
