South African President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in Zimbabwe on Tuesday ahead of the scheduled Bi-National Commission (BNC), which he will chair alongside his host President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Relations between the two countries are conducted through the BNC, which was established in 2015, and requires that the two sides meet annually.
While addressing delegates at the opening session of the commission, President Ramaphosa hailed its impact, urging for even closer ties.
“Through steadfast servicing of this BNC, our two countries will be able to consolidate the bilateral cooperation existing between our countries and to explore other areas of cooperation.
“Since the inaugural session of the BNC, there have been increased interactions between our respective government departments,” Ramaphosa said.
The South African leader also pledged his country’s support to Zimbabwe in its road towards economic recovery.
“South Africa stands ready to render support to Zimbabwe within our means in your quest for economic renewal.
“It is our wish that, using the BNC mechanism, we should at our level strive to provide the strategic impetus to drive the bilateral relations to a significantly higher level.”
