Rwanda invites President Macron for genocide memorial
Rwanda has invited the French President Emmanuel Macron for the commemoration of the 1994 genocide scheduled to take place early next month.
2019 marks 25 years since the country underwent the tragic period that led to the deaths of more than 250,000 people in a span of 100 days.
“President Macron has… been invited to the 25th commemoration of the 1994 genocide,” AFP quotes Rwanda’s state minister for foreign affairs, Olivier Nduhungirehe.
Macron has however not indicated whether he will attend.
If he accepts the invite, Macron will become only the second French leader to visit the East African nation since the eruption of the genocide.
Nicolas Sarkozy was the first in February 2010.
