Baxter announces squad to play Libya in crucial AFCON qualifier

South Africa’s national football coach Stuart Baxter on Monday announced a 24-man squad for the team’s crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya later this month.

The game will be staged in Tunisia on March 24 due to insecurity fears in Libya.
Bafana Bafana are currently ranked second in Group E with nine points, one behind leaders Nigeria who have already qualified for the continental tournament.

Libya are third in the group with 7 points, and will go into the match knowing a win against the 2010 World Cup hosts could seal their qualification for AFCON.

Baxter expects a tough challenge from the North Africans, but is confident his side has what it takes to book their place in the tournament.

Egypt will host AFCON in June-July, the first time the competition will be hosted during that time of the year.

This will also be the first edition to have 24 teams participating, an increase from 16 in the last editions.
