Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has congratulated his Senegalese counterpart Macky Sall for winning the February 24 election to earn a second mandate.

Sall won with over 58% of the votes ahead of second placed Idrissa Seck, who garnered 21 percent of the vote.

“I convey my hearty congratulations to H.E. Macky Sall following his re-election for a 2nd term in office as the President of the Republic of Senegal. The peaceful election is a highlight of a robust democratic foundation which has earned Senegal recognition as a model of stability,” President Kenyatta said via his official Twitter handle.

Senegal’s presidential election was the second in Africa this year, coming after fellow West African country Nigeria, in which President Muhammadu Buhari also retained his seat for a second term.

Supporters of Sall, who was first elected in 2012, hailed his performance in the country’s infrastructural sector as well as the economy.

The 57-year-old has also been congratulated by Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, who said his re-election was “well-deserved, and a vindication of the trust and confidence reposed in him.”
