
NIGERIA DECIDES: Curbing fake news during elections
In the run up to the 2019 Nigerian elections, the country has witnessed incidences of fake news aimed at tarnishing the names of candidates, parties or even the electoral commission.
The spread of fake news in the West African country has largely been propagated by negative use of social media.
In a country of close to 200 million people, with over 100 million owning internet-enabled phones, false information can reach a very huge number in a very short time.
Just recently, the Independent National Electroal Commission (INEC) came out to deny reports circulating on social media, purpoting that one of its officials had been offered a bribe by one of the presidential candidates.
This and many more similar instances have been used by various people in a bid to gain unfair advantage in the elections.
So just how can Nigerians tackle the spread of fake news?
CGTN posed this question to Andy Madaki, a Nigerian Digital Media Expert and Communications Consultant. Here’s what he had to say;
