The Kenyan government has recovered over Ksh3 billion (around $30 million) that was lost to corruption over the past two years, the country’s Attorney-General Paul Kihara says.
According to the attorney general’s report, at least 700 graft cases were still going on in court in different parts of the country.
“We have at least over Ksh3 billion in recoveries from corruption and money laundering cases,” local Daily Nation newspaper quotes Kihara.
Kihara assured Kenyans that the government had stepped up the fight against corruption through the establishment of the National task Force on Anti-Money Laundering in 2015.
The task force is charged with investigating graft cases, making arrests and leading prosecutions in court cases.
The AG said the fight against corruption had the backing of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“Our focus on asset recovery has the highest political will from President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has expressed his commitment in terms of the law and resources,” Kihara pointed out.
President Kenyatta has on numerous occasions made public speeches condemning graft and calling for the apprehension and trial of suspects.
The Kenyan authorities have seized cars, houses and other properties that were obtained by proceeds of corruption.
