The United States embassy in Kenya’s capital Nairobi on Monday issued a security alert, citing credible information that Westerners may be targeted by extremist.
In the security alert sent out, the U.S embassy cautioned its citizens and citizens at large on a potential threat in the coastal region, Nairobi, Naivasha and Nanyuki.
“The U.S. Embassy reminds the public of the continued need for heightened vigilance throughout Kenya, especially in public spaces such as shopping malls, hotels, and places of worship,” the embassy said in a statement on its website.

The warning comes barely three weeks after Islamic militant group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for an attack at a luxury hotel and office complex housing multinational companies in Nairobi on January 15 that left 21 people dead and several others injured.
The alert further urged U.S. citizens and the Kenyan public to be aware of their surroundings, and report suspicious activity to authorities immediately.
“You should ensure that you have your travel documents up to date and easily accessible and also review security plans of the country,” reads part of the statement.
Two people were injured on January 26 when a suspected improvised explosive device exploded at a busy street in Nairobi a day after the U.S. embassy issued similar alert.
