Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame takes over EAC leadership

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame on Friday took over the leadership of the East African Community (EAC) at a Heads of State Summit held in the Tanzanian city of Arusha.

All the regions leaders expect Burundi’s Pierre Nkurunziza and South Sudan’s Salva Kiir gathered for the delayed summit themed ‘Enhancing Economic, Social and Political Integration of the East African Community’.

The two leaders who did not attend however sent representatives.

In his inaugural speech as the chairman of the EAC for the next year, Kagame called for unity in the region and urged the bloc to become people centered.

“As leaders of the Community, we therefore need to come together in a spirit of solidarity and unity for the benefit and well-being of the citizens of our region,” he said.
