Andry Rajoelina has won the Madagascar presidential run-off election, BBC reports quoting electoral authorities there.

Rajoelina beat his challenger Marc Ravalomanana after garnering 56 percent of the votes, winning a second stint in the presidency.

Both Rajoelina and Ravalomanana have led the island nation before.

Ravalomanana has however alleged irregularities, saying the election was filled with “massive fraud”.

The constitutional court now has nine days to decide whether to confirm the commission’s results.

In the initial Malagasy presidential election held on November 7, a record 36 candidates participated, , three more than the previous record of 33 set in the 2013 vote.

In that vote, Rajoelina emerged winner with 39.4 percent, ahead of Marc Ravalomanana who had 34.8 percent. A run-off vote was called since neither attained the required 50 percent plus one vote.

The most recent president, Hery Rajaonarimampianina, was far behind with 8.9 percent of the votes counted.
