
‘World Cup’ is 2018 most Googled term globally

Google recently released its year-end report for 2018, highlighting the most searched words globally and even in respective countries. The report reveals top trends in 2018 compared to the previous years and also provides a country-by-country breakdown what was hot and not in those respective nations.
World Cup emerged as the winner in 2018 as the most searched word or phrase. The FIFA tournament that took place in Russia was the most-trending search term.
Politics also featured among the most searched word globally. The term “election results” was the fifth-most trending news term in the world. Major elections happened in Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Malaysia, India, and elsewhere.
Google further classified top most trending searches in each and every respective country globally and African countries like Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe featured among the list.
Here is a brief look at what people in several African countries were searching for in 2018.

In Nigeria, Alexis Sanchez was the most searched person followed by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Meghan Markle respectively. Black Panther made it as the most searched movie while Osun election lead in the most searched news item.
Slain Kenyan University female student Sharon Otieno was the most searched for local person or term among Kenyans. Controversial deported Kenyan-Canadian lawyer Miguna Miguna was second. Manchester United Chilean attacker Alexis Sanchez led the list of global personalities most googled in Kenya. The 2018 World Cup was the top trending event.
Zimbabweans were most interested in sports, politics and Hollywood as the World Cup, Nelson Chamisa, Morgan Tsvangirai, Zimbabwe elections and Black Panther topped the list of most searched terms in Zimbabwe.

Former president Jacob Zuma topped as the most searched personality in South Africa. Current president Cyril Ramaphosa took the second position. Fitness coach Sbahle Mpisane finished third. The World Cup, Global Citizen and the late Winnie Mandela were among the most googled topics in South Africa.
