Serge Aurier blasts CAF for suggesting Cameroon takes AFCON 2021 from Cote d’Ivoire
Cote d’Ivoire’s defender Serge Aurier has slammed the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for suggesting that Cameroon could replace his country as the host nation for the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
CAF president Ahmad Ahmad said in an interview last week that Cameroon, which was stripped of the rights to host the 2019 AFCON, could be offered the 2021 edition instead.
“I’m shocked, I don’t understand this decision,” Canal+ reports Aurier to have said.
“For me, it’s a shambles, a matter for politicians. It’s a pity, it’s a stupid decision. As a player, we want this CAN in 2021 in our country,” he added.
After stripping Cameroon of the rights to host next year’s AFCON, CAF said it would pick a replacement before the end of the year.
South Africa and Morocco have both expressed interest in hosting the continental tournament, and both are confident their ready facilities will swing favour to their side.
