The Democratic Republic of Congo’s President Joseph Kabila has promised a peaceful and credible election as the country seeks his replacement.
Speaking to the BBC, Kabila did not rule out running for office again in the future.
The 47-year-old was due to step down at the end of 2016, when his second and final term was scheduled to come to an end.
A failure to hold elections meant Kabila stayed on as president, sparking accusations from opposition leaders that he was frustrating the electoral process in order to cling on to power. He however rejected those accusations.
Kabila announced earlier this year that he would not be seeking another term, just as prescribed by the constitution.
Should the DR Cong elections go on as planned, the country will witness a peaceful transfer of power for the first time since independence in 1960.
