8 people lost their lives in a traffic accident in Uganda on Wednesday night, after a commuter taxi rammed into a coaster on the Iganga-Jinja highway.
According to the Daily Monitor, the crash took place as the taxi tried to overtake another vehicle at a junction near Namasoga village.
A traffic police officer who refused to be named told the local daily that the taxi most likely had been speeding when the accident occurred.
Those injured were taken to hospitals in Jinja and Iganga, where two children are said to be fighting for their lives.
The accident took place just hours after safety on the roads was discussed in Uganda’s Parliament.
Uganda’s Minister of State for Works General Edward Wamala announced interventions on the Entebbe express highway to curb a high number of road accidents there.

Some members of the public meanwhile took to social media to make a plea for ambulances in most areas, for a better chance at preserving life following road crashes.
